CREATIVE CITIES AND INDUSTRIES: Vision and Challenges

In this session, Edna dos Santos, the chairman of Creative Industries department of United Nations Conference on Trade and Development Organisation (UNCTAD) and Charles LANDRY, founder of the concept of creative cities and İsmail ERTURK, from Manchester University, expert of Cultural Economy and Finance, will explain the concepts of "creative city" and "creative industries", with examples from the world of cities and countries in the development of creative activity and discuss the future of the economy and draw a frame for topics that are covered in the symposium.

GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE ON CREATIVE CITIES

In this session, the cities which have developed and practiced the Creative city strategies will be examined by the questions; what they understand from the concept of "creative city", why they adopt this strategy, what the cities gained from this strategy. UNESCO has constituted a "creative cities" network in the world, some cities like Istanbul, has competed and still competes to be the "cultural capital", some world cities aim to be a global design capital, etc. Here, the development and competitiveness of global cities in terms of the concept of creative cities will be discussed.

CREATIVE  INDUSTRIES AND ENTREPRENEURS – Case study

The function of entrepreneurs has always been taken seriously for economic development and growth. In the 21th century, as the city development models became highly dependant on creative industries, educating and supporting the entrepreneurs, who establishes and manages the creative industries turned out to be vital. Facebook and Apple are companies which operate in creative industries. It is becoming an economic policy that enhancing the skills and qualifications of entrepreneurs who establish creative industries and increasing the number of entrepreneurs, creating synergy with other industries. In this session, success stories from entrepreneurs who accomplished in various industry branches in different countries in creative industries will be told.

THE ROLE OF CREATIVE INDUSTRIES IN RANKING GLOBAL CITIES

The size of creative industries and creative activity is playing an important role for the competition for global cities to attract investment and tourists. As a result, the demand for lists which rank global cities in a competitive manner has increased. In this session, three international institutions which have developed this type of rating and ranking index -Comedia, Creative Cities Organisation and the World Cities Centre - will be argued by describing the variables used in this index. Also the rank of Istanbul in such comparative indices will be discussed.

ROUND TABLE FOR ISTANBUL: From Capital of Culture to Global Creative City

During the Round Table, after the six sessions of the symposium, the contribution of "creative city" and "creative industries" to Istanbul's economic growth will be taken in a wide range of aspects. Also the needs for taking Istanbul to a higher place in this ranking after the title "European Culture Capital" will be discussed. Before the symposium, the round table participants will be gathered in order to discuss the aims of the round table. After the discussion, the suggestions of the participants will be evaluated and the round table will be done within the framework of these questions and matters. Also, during the round table, the ideas and suggestions for founding an "International Creative Cities and Industries Research Institute" will be developed.
